Welcome to Astronomy!

I know the end of summer is always a bit sad, but entering the Mosaic classroom again gave me that little burst of excitement I needed! It was such a pleasure to see so many returning students and meet new ones. I was especially pleased to see that everyone came very well prepared. Thank you!

Class time today was very basic. I introduced myself, the other students, and I went over the fundamentals and our basic rules. Again, I asked the students to arrive at least 5 minutes early each week, so we can begin our projects and actually finish them in our very short time. (Believe me it goes quickly!)

Students should always have their text books, folder/notebooks, supplies, homework, pencils and most importantly their library books. I reviewed the syllabus with them, so hopefully they understand how to follow it. Although I did explain that they should always refer to the weekly update for the most accurate homework assignments. We discussed how homework (including the optional work) can easily be completed in three days each week. Although I do not check most of the homework, I will assess their learning periodically with fun quiz show days. Prizes will be included, so they should stay on top of their home learning. Last, I outlined our classroom library. I explained to the students that it is not required to read the entire library book each week, rather it is meant to be explored. Students should pick and choose what interests them most out of the books. They do need to return the books each week, but there should be enough time for them to borrow their favorites more than once.

After all of the formalities were covered, the class headed downstairs for a Solar System Scavenger Hunt. They searched for fact cards which helped them answer 18 questions. I believe they had a lot of fun and were quite challenged! Afterwards, we headed upstairs and began watching a short educational video on the planets. We will finish the video next week since we ran out of time.

Next week we will be making a solar system model, so we need all of our supplies.
